As Valentine’s Day approaches and love is in the air, I can’t help but be reminded of what makes nonprofit organizations such great partners. With 1.8 million nonprofits in the United States, chances are you’ve interacted with one of them and know there’s a lot to love about the sector. But in case you’re on the fence about taking things to the next level with a nonprofit, here are five reasons to show them some love.
- They know trust is the foundation of any strong relationship. Nonprofits are one of the only institutions trusted by a majority of Americans. The more you get to know the nonprofits in your community, the more enduring that trust will be.
- They know your value. Over two-thirds of nonprofit leaders believe volunteers (like you!) increase the organization’s return on its resource investment, and nearly three quarters of nonprofit leaders believe volunteers increase the quality of programs and services.
- They’re not afraid to put in the work. Nonprofits work hard to help ensure your friends, family, and neighbors can access healthcare, receive a quality education, play safely in local parks, worship freely, and give back to the community through youth programs. Over half of nonprofits increased their delivery of goods and services to meet demand during the pandemic.
- They’re supportive of your family and community. More than half of nonprofits have programs that serve the general public, over one-quarter have programs that serve the Black or Latinx communities, one-third have programs that focus on women and girls or men and boys, and one-fifth focus on the LGBTQ+ or disability communities.
- They’ll speak up for you and empower you to use your voice. Nonprofits regularly participate in civic engagement activities such as providing spaces for community gatherings, organizing marches, leading “get out the vote” efforts, and raising funds for community causes.
Now that you’re smitten and dreaming of your future together, here are three ways to express your love for nonprofits.
- Send a valentine to a nonprofit in your community or one with a mission you’re passionate about. Your valentine could be a donation or a heartfelt message expressing your gratitude for their work.
- Nonprofits report that donations from individuals are essential or very important to their work, especially smaller nonprofits. Ask your legislators to support The Charitable Act to further incentivize Americans — regardless of income — to give to charity.
- Nearly half of people reported volunteering in 2022. Join the fun and check out VolunteerMatch or Points of Light to find volunteer opportunities with nonprofits in your community.
Bonus: If you’re affiliated with a nonprofit, consider becoming a member of Independent Sector and joining a community of changemakers, nonprofits, foundations, and corporations committed to building a healthy, trusted, and equitable sector and society!
