30 years
Hispanics in Philanthropy
As an IS member of 30 years, Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) has been with us nearly as long as they have been around. Established in 1987, Oakland-based HIP has grown to represent and serve a transnational network of funders dedicated to making impactful investments in Latinx communities. On the grantee side of the charitable community, the affinity group also helps connect nonprofits to funding, and develop their leadership so that they may have maximum impact in their communities. HIP is led by Ana Marie Argilagos as of about this time last year, when Ariglagos succeeded Diana Campoamor, the organization’s leader of nearly three decades. Recently, Ariglagos co-authored an opinion piece in the Washington Post with National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy leader Aaron Dorfman and Puerto Rico Community Foundation leader Nelson I. Colón. In it, the three authors emphasized that despite the inspiring resourcefulness of Puerto Ricans in the wake of Hurricane Maria, the U.S. territory still finds itself far from full recovery at the onset of another hurricane season.

Imagine Canada
Imagine Canada is one of the international members we’re proud to have on board as a member. In a way, Imagine Canada is to Canada’s charitable sector what IS is to the U.S. charitable sector. They partner with the charitable sector, and often alongside the private sector, government, and individual members of society to ensure that Canada’s charities play an important role in enriching and defining Canada. Imagine Canada was launched in 2005 after the nation’s leading charitable umbrella organizations—Canadian Centre for Philanthropy and the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations—merged. Their main office is in Toronto, and a satellite office is in the Canadian capital of Ottawa. Bruce MacDonald is in his fourth year of leading the organization. Back in April, we were proud to share a significant piece of research the organization put out charting donor behavior in Canada over the past three decades.

Ropes & Gray LLP
Ropes & Gray is a large network of legal firms with dozens of practice areas, one of which focuses on charitable foundations. Led by Carolyn Ward, the charitable foundations practice is dedicated to helping foundations concentrate on their grantmaking through services that ensure funders are operating ethically, effectively, and within the legal parameters all tax-exempt organizations are expected to comply with. Previously an adviser to members of Congress when she served as counsel for the Joint Committee on Taxation, Ward now focuses her tax law expertise in service of clients at tax-exempt organizations.
