Report to Thought-Leaders: What We Learned

This report summarizes learnings from The Leighty Foundation’s interviews with 17 national thought leaders on strategic volunteer engagement, as well as online research into field and movement building, effective framing and messaging, and strategy development.

The Leighty Foundation’s vision is that volunteer engagement will become a standard principle and best practice in the social sector embraced by nonprofits and funders alike. The foundation launched an investigative process in August 2020 to learn how the philanthropic sector might shape and initiate a strategy to realize this vision.

The Leighty Foundation was an original funding partner of the Initiative for Strategic Volunteer Engagement (ISVE): a three-year partnership of visionary funders and national nonprofits aiming to transform the future of volunteerism. ISVE now lives within Independent Sector as IS’s Strategic Volunteer Engagement Program.
