2025 was a year that tested us, challenged us— and united us. In the face of existential threats to the 1.9 million nonprofits and philanthropies that keep American communities healthy and whole, Independent Sector worked to build new and enduring bipartisan relationships in Congress to defend and support our sector and created strong coalitions opposing the weaponization of government against charitable organizations. We convened nearly 1,000 nonprofit leaders at Independent Sector’s National Summit in Atlanta last October to strategize, build partnerships, and share resources. And we pushed back against the harmful rhetoric undermining and demeaning the work of 13.9 million American nonprofit workers. That work has already paid off: Despite the target painted on our sector over the past year, Independent Sector research showed that 57% of Americans highly trust nonprofits — the highest level of trust for any sector of American society.

In 2026 and beyond, Independent Sector will continue working to address sector-wide financial, workforce, governance, and advocacy challenges so charitable organizations can focus on what they do best: serving their communities.
