Today, millions of Americans will be exercising one of their most important rights – voting.
Independent Sector joins nonprofits around the country in encouraging our staff, volunteers, and everyone in our communities to exercise their right to choose their elected officials and have their say on important policy issues.
Voter engagement is a critical part of nonprofit work because it empowers the people and communities we serve and helps further our missions. According to Nonprofit VOTE, people who vote are more likely to volunteer, contact their elected officials, and stay informed about local affairs. Nonprofit voters turned out in record numbers in 2012. The young, low-income, and diverse populations frequently served by nonprofits formed a larger share of the electorate than ever before.
