Yesterday, the House Committee on Ways and Means sent a notice clarifying that by noon tomorrow ET, some households with children under the age of 17 may need to file a form with the Internal Revenue Service in order to receive $500 for each child as a part of their COVID-19 relief payments.
Specifically, the following households will need to file an online form:
- Households that did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 with dependent children under age 17;
- Veteran benefit recipients who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 with dependent children under age 17;
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients with dependent children under age 17.
The Administration took swift action to ensure that seniors and other Americans who are on Social Security would receive automatic coronavirus relief payments. The Treasury Department announced that for Social Security beneficiaries with dependents who did not file taxes in 2018 or 2019, they will need to fill out a form through the online tool by 12 PM ET Wednesday, April 22 in order to receive the $500 payments for their dependent children.
“If the IRS does not receive this essential information by Wednesday, their payment will be $1,200 and the $500 per child will be paid to them with a return filing for tax year 2020,” Secretary Mnuchin said. By entering some basic information, these individuals can receive the full amount owed to them as part of the CARES Act.
If your nonprofit organization serves these households, please pass along the link to the online form as well as information about tomorrow’s deadline. With such widespread need, it is critically important to ensure our communities are accessing all available assistance.
