(WASHINGTON, October 28, 2021) – Daniel J. Cardinali, president and CEO of Independent Sector issues the following statement:
“The Build Back Better framework announced this morning includes historic investments in priorities that will help the nonprofit sector in its work to ensure all people thrive. While many details remain to be seen, Independent Sector heartily applauds the framework and all who negotiated it in good faith.
In particular, we’re encouraged to see a number of key civic infrastructure priorities included in this framework:
- Creation of a diverse Civilian Climate Corps;
- the largest investment in affordable child care in the nation’s history;
- the largest investment in affordable housing in the nation’s history;
- home and building energy efficiency incentives; and
- major investments in workforce development programs and research infrastructure at minority-serving institutions of higher education.
In addition to the victories that will be enacted when this framework becomes law, it also will unlock another monumental piece of legislation, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
As we have said before, Independent Sector urges the U.S. House of Representatives to pass this legislation – and its generational investments in broadband, public transit, clean water, and more – and to immediately fix the damaging revocation of a key tax credit for nonprofit employers.
There is much work to be done. Independent Sector is deeply gratified by this progress and looks forward to working with policymakers and the charitable community to see these bills passed and programs successfully implemented.”
