In June 2018, Independent Sector and Stanford Social Innovation Review launched Civil Society for the 21st Century, an article series featuring some of today’s leading thinkers and practitioners exploring current issues in civil society.
Does civil society function if humanity isn’t at the center?
Ai-jen Poo, executive director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and co-director of Caring Across Generations, doesn’t think so. In her article, she argues that fixing systems and following rules will ultimately do little to help advance civil society unless we focus on our shared values and connection with each other as human beings.
Poo highlights the successes of her advocacy efforts for domestic workers and explains that fighting for their respect and dignity is key to civil society’s renewal and strength.
