Under the Trump-Vance administration, Independent Sector will continue to advocate for policies that support the charitable sector and its work to ensure that all people thrive.
With the election of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance to the White House, Independent Sector stands ready to engage with the incoming administration and new Congress — on both sides of the aisle — to advance policies that support charitable giving, the nonprofit workforce, and a thriving civil society.
“Nonprofits are among the most trusted institutions in the United States. The charitable sector has the power and proven track record to build bridges across divides, create positive impact in our communities, and contribute to a thriving democracy,” said Dr. Akilah Watkins, Independent Sector President and CEO.
“A just democracy and a vibrant civil society where all people thrive are the bedrock of the American experiment. A healthy, trusted, and equitable charitable sector is an essential partner to government in meeting the needs, and lifting the hopes, of all communities. Where President-Elect Trump has ideas aimed at strengthening the health of America’s nonprofit sector, we look forward to listening and working with his team,” Dr. Watkins added.
At Independent Sector, we work in a nonpartisan capacity to strengthen our sector, our communities, and our democracy. We conduct research, develop policies, and design programs to ensure that charitable organizations are financially robust; powered by a thriving workforce; trusted, well-governed, and effective; and informed and active advocates as allowed by law.
As the nation’s third-largest private employer, and an essential partner in delivering critical community services, nonprofits strengthen the American economy and our society. In 2025 and beyond, we will continue to work with leaders on both sides of the aisle who are committed to keeping the charitable sector healthy, trusted, and equitable, and the communities we serve strong. Our policy priorities include ensuring that:
- Representation: Our sector has permanent representation in the Executive Office of the President where decisions are made, and expertise is needed.
- Tax Legislation: Large-scale tax legislation helps to build healthier, trusted nonprofits and philanthropy.
- Charitable Giving: Tax incentives to give to charity are available to all Americans.
- Tax Credit Fairness: Nonprofit employers receive the same types of incentives as the for-profit sector — from starting a pension plan to providing on-site childcare facilities.
- Data Access: Nonprofits receive the same quarterly wage and employment data as for-profits receive.
