About the Dashboard
Whether you are advocating for, conducting research on, or simply trying to learn about the nonprofit sector, having the right data is critical. Independent Sector has compiled this interactive dashboard to help, providing data for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the United States. Data shown are the most recent available from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS); Census Bureau; AmeriCorps; and Independent Sector’s own research on the size of the sector, its economic impact, its paid workforce, and its volunteer workforce. The dashboard also offers real success stories about how organizations across the country are delivering vital community services, giving voice to the people they serve, contributing to vibrant communities, and advancing solutions for societal challenges. Instructions for Using the Dashboard

We are happy to receive your comments and appreciate your help in continuing to build this tool, which we hope will serve to strengthen the nonprofit sector in every community nationwide.
- Filter reports by selecting a state in the drop-down menu at the top of the dashboard. To access national data, please select “United States.”
- The data is divided into four categories: At A Glance, Nonprofit Organizations, Paid Workforce, and Volunteer Workforce. Click on each category to view the corresponding data.
- Some graphics include a help button
that provides additional information about each graphic. - Finally, some data visualizations include a Zoom feature (a black bar with two white dots at the ends). Both ends of the bar can be adjusted to find the data you are searching for, allowing you to zoom in on each graph category.
- For best results when printing this dashboard as a PDF, set your printer to high resolution or 1200 dpi.
