Born out of the Independent Sector Annual Conference, Upswell was created in 2018 to be a central meeting place for all changemakers, including community activists, nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, business and corporate leaders, academics, journalists, and others partnering to build a healthy and just nation.

About Upswell
Our collective goal of building a racially just nation will require the best ideas, innovations, lessons-learned from changemakers around the country. Here are some of the ways we focus on doing that.
- The well-being and care of changemakers and our communities is imperative, especially considering the impact of the pandemic and uncertainties and volatilities of the last couple years. This is also a necessary foundation to any collective actions we take.
- Bridging differences toward justice and belonging. Finding ways to build bridges across our shared humanity while acknowledging and appreciating what makes each of us different is needed to harness the collective power to challenge.
- Transforming and changing systems through advocacy and public policy. Only when we focus our efforts to challenging, disrupting, and focusing on systems can we create a racially just nation.
