“September 11 has rightly become a day for searching our national soul. While it feels like we’ve never been more divided around issues of politics, race, or immigration, we should remind ourselves that our country is more united than we realize. Below the surface and beyond the headlines and social media posts, individuals and organizations in the charitable community work together to heal our sick, feed our hungry, enrich our communities with arts and culture, and encourage active civic engagement to strengthen our democracy.
It was that kind of unity that helped us move beyond 9/11, and we continue to find our better selves after each and every setback. Whether it’s flooding in Louisiana, the nightclub shooting in Orlando, or disturbing instances of police violence, Americans have always shown an amazing ability to pick up, help out, and heal.
It reminds me of a quote from Fred Rogers who once noted that there is hope even after tragedy.
‘When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’’
