(WASHINGTON, May 25, 2022) – Daniel J. Cardinali, President and CEO of Independent Sector, issues the following statement:
“Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of the victims of yet another mass shooting in the United States – this time at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where the majority of the victims were children.
On the two-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd and just ten days after another mass shooting targeting Black people in Buffalo, stating that we are overwhelmed by the grief is a severe understatement.
We know there are leaders and organizations in our communities who will have no choice but to wake up today and show up for Ulvade, Texas. We know there are countless advocates among us who will continue to work toward ensuring that our society is safe and free of gun-related violence of any kind. Our thoughts are also with you – for finding the strength and resolve to do what you do when we are all so stricken with exhaustion and grief.
Like I told the Independent Sector staff this morning, please make sure you’re taking care of yourselves and your friends and family first. There is no way to avoid the brutal, traumatic reality of this violence and injustice. For Hispanic and/or Latinx people, who make up the majority of Uvalde’s community, all parents, and all educators and school staff, this is a particularly traumatic event. Please take the time to care for one another.”
