Johnson Center Reports Trends for Philanthropy in 2022
The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy, an Independent Sector member, published its sixth annual report surrounding the role philanthropy plays in E Pluribus Unum, meaning “Out of many, one.” The Center found that many in the sector have been reflecting on this, as well. The report considers trends like increasing attention to the decline in household giving to nonprofits, and philanthropy entering a new era of engagement with Native communities.

Johns Hopkins University Report Shows Nonprofit Workforce is 3.7% Smaller in 2021
The Center for Civil Society Studies at Johns Hopkins University has been producing monthly updates on nonprofit employment since May 2020. As of December 2021, nonprofit jobs stood at around 12 million, whereas in February 2020, nonprofit employment was at 12.5 million. The report breaks down the various fields like educational services, arts, religious organizations, social assistance, and health care. Although this will be the final monthly report, the Center is creating a new data dashboard that can be followed for more data trends in the future.

Ford Foundation Funds $25 Million Grant for Informal Workers
The Ford Foundation announced a five-year plan to strengthen and support informal workers who are among the most under-resourced and unprotected employees within the workforce. Informal workers represent street vendors, some construction workers, domestic workers, waste pickers, and many more across the world. According to The NonProfit Times, workers in informal employment account for more than 60% of all the world’s workforce, and 90% of workers in developing countries. They have also been on the frontlines for the entirety of the pandemic with no social or labor protections. The Ford Foundation has partnered with Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) to support them in their global recovery process.
