As part of our ongoing efforts to emphasize the critical importance of strong and transformational leaders in the charitable sector, Independent Sector is currently seeking nominations for the 2018 John W. Gardner Leadership Award.
Established in 1985, the Gardner Award honors outstanding Americans who exemplify the leadership and ideals of John W. Gardner (1912-2002), American statesman and founding chair of Independent Sector.
Independent Sector presents the award each year to an individual whose leadership has transformed the nonprofit community, and has mobilized and unified people, institutions, or causes that improve the quality of life on our planet.

Nominations for this year’s award must be made without the candidate’s knowledge and submitted by Monday, April 2, 2018. The awardee will be recognized at Upswell this November 14-16 in Los Angeles. The recipient must be able to attend the awards ceremony in person.
Past John W. Gardner Leadership Award recipients include sector members who are focused on a variety of important causes. Recent honorees include eBay founder Jeff Skoll (2012), Advancement Project’s Constance L. “Connie” Rice (2013), Knight Foundation’s Alberto Ibargüen (2014), City Year’s Michael Brown (2015), and Equal Justice Initiative’s Bryan Stevenson (2016).

At Our Common Future last year in Detroit, Independent Sector presented this prestigious award to Rosanne Haggerty, President and CEO of Community Solutions, an organization that aims to end homelessness and the conditions that create it.
