(WASHINGTON, April 8, 2020) – The following statement is from Daniel J. Cardinali, president and CEO of Independent Sector:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Independent Sector Board Member and U.S.-Japan Council President Irene Hirano Inouye.
The U.S.-Japan Council is a nonprofit dedicated to building people-to-people relationships between the United States and Japan. The strong enthusiasm and level of commitment Irene brought to her position as Council President was also clearly evident in the leadership she brought to Independent Sector and the entire charitable community.
Irene served on the IS board from 2010 to 2015. She also served in a leadership capacity for IS member organizations that included chair and trustee of the Ford Foundation and Kresge Foundation, and board chair of the American Association of Museums.
She worked tirelessly in the sector for many years and contributed to the sector her expertise in nonprofit administration, community education, and public affairs with culturally diverse communities nationwide.
We extend our condolences to Irene’s loved ones and mourn the loss of this remarkable leader, and outstanding bridge-builder, and sector advocate.”
