(WASHINGTON, January 23, 2019) – The following statement is from Daniel J. Cardinali, president and CEO of Independent Sector:
“I lost a friend and a mentor yesterday with the passing of Harris Wofford, while America lost one of its most ardent champions of the common good.
“Harris dedicated his life to the ideal of giving back, taking responsibility, and making the world a better place. ‘Citizen service’ is what he called it in his acceptance speech for the 2002 John W. Gardner Leadership Award, and his own life was the perfect example. Starting with the Student Federalists, a high school group he founded and grew into a national movement, Harris dedicated his life to inspiring young people, especially, to participate in civil society.
“From the Peace Corps to Americorps to America’s Promise, Harris had a leadership role in every major effort to mobilize voluntary public service. His charge to the nonprofit sector back in 2002 still resonates today: ‘Help unleash the national optimism and can-do spirit of our young people for the greater good of all of us.’”
