Two charitable community leaders are elected to the Board of Directors at Independent Sector’s Annual Meeting of Members
(LOS ANGELES, November 14, 2018) – Today, Independent Sector elected two new directors to the Board.
The new directors were each elected to serve a three-year term at Independent Sector’s Annual Meeting of Members during Upswell, a three-day gathering in Los Angeles of purpose-driven professionals to forge new partnerships, exchange lessons learned, and explore best practices to tackle big challenges facing communities nationwide.
“We are rising together in a spirit of collaboration at Upswell to consider unique approaches to tough challenges with the goal of achieving greater impact in communities,” said Daniel J. Cardinali, president and CEO of Independent Sector. “We are excited that the depth of insight and leadership experience our new board members bring will help accelerate our work even further to expand the ways IS engages with changemakers and builds community in the sector.”

Additionally, the following directors have been re-elected to a second term:

- Terry Mazany, Senior Vice President for Philanthropy, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta
- Henry Timms, Executive Director, 92nd Street Y
Independent Sector, its board, staff, and members also thank retiring board member Kathy Calvin, president and CEO of United Nations Foundation, for her outstanding service to the organization.
Following are the new board directors’ biographies:
Janine Lee is the president and CEO of the Southeastern Council of Foundations (SECF), the nation’s largest regional association of grantmakers, serving more than 330 foundations and corporate giving programs – representing more than $50 billion in assets – active in the South. Janine is a veteran strategist and grantmaker in philanthropy, with more than 25 years of rich and diverse leadership at nonprofits and foundations. SECF works in partnership with members in 11 Southeastern states to serve, strengthen, promote, and champion the South’s philanthropic voice and infrastructure through engaging programming, leadership development, public policy engagement, access to unique resources and invaluable connections. By encouraging insightful philanthropic collaboration, SECF creates opportunities to increase the region’s grantmaking impact and empower transformational community change. During her career in philanthropy, Janine has served in leadership roles at the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, where she worked as vice president of education programs, and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, where she was vice president of community building and philanthropy. Janine serves on the Board of Trustees with the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, the Board of Trustees of the National Center for Family Philanthropy, the Steering Committee of the Georgia Grantmakers Alliance (GGA), the Advisory Committee for the Foundation Center in Atlanta, and the Mayor’s Advisory Board on Homelessness. She is a co-founder and former chair of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO). In 2017, she was named an Arthur Vining Davis Foundations Aspen Fellow. Janine is a co-author of, “Funding Effectiveness: Lessons in Building Nonprofit Capacity.”
Jim Clark is president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of America. He leads a network of 4,300 Boys & Girls Clubs that serve nearly four million young people annually in all 50 states, in large cities and small towns, in public housing and on Native lands, and on U.S. military installations across the globe. More than 50,000 professional staff members operate the Clubs, supported by some 285,000 board and program volunteers. Jim has guided the organization through the launch of an exciting new strategic direction, the Great Futures Impact Plan. Under his leadership, Clubs are increasing impact on the young people they serve by focusing on three priority outcome areas – Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. To ensure BGCA provides the best possible service to Clubs, Jim has spearheaded a major restructuring of the national organization. He has introduced innovative programming that supports the three outcome areas in ways that are fun and engaging – such as state-of-the-art STEM initiatives, and Brain Gain, a program to combat summer learning loss.
