Seeking “Courageous and Innovative” Nonprofit Sector Advocate to Lead Independent Sector

As you probably already know, Independent Sector made two important announcements this year regarding the leadership of our organization. First, President and CEO, Dan Cardinali, announced in January 2022 that he would step down this calendar year pending the announcement of his replacement. Then in March, our Board of Directors announced the names of the members of the national search committee, and named global organizational consulting firm, Korn Ferry, to lead the critical process to identify our new President and CEO.

Independent Sector holds a distinct place among infrastructure organizations as a national leader with a long legacy of policy influence and voice, and an imaginative innovator in building and sustaining relationships with the larger changemaker community. Representing a diverse group of 500 organizational members and leaders across nonprofit, philanthropy, academia, business, community-based organizations, and government – IS is uniquely positioned to understand the trends of leadership, social change, and usher in a new set of inspirational and equitable goals for the sector.

Who Are We Seeking?

In addition to a bridge-building leader to shepherd the organization and entire sector toward a healthy and equitable future we all hope to see for all communities and our nation, here’s a brief overview of what the search committee is seeking for our next leader:

  • Visionary and engaged leadership for Independent Sector in partnership with our Board, and in service to the members and the nonprofit field, building upon Independent Sector’s strategic framework and driving actions and outcomes for the agenda of the organization.
  • With an authentic commitment to equity and antiracism, the ability to forge and strengthen relationships within, across, and beyond the sector, as well as cultivate new ventures for the organization that best support the field.
  • Under guidance of and in partnership with our Board, the ability to evolve the organization’s approach to engage and serve members, grow the network, promote impact, advance equity, and address a wide set of issues facing the nonprofit sector in an ever-evolving climate.
  • Bold thought leadership to engage and align both members and the field – adeptly navigating the political climate — and leverage opportunities for equitable advancement within, across, and outside of the nonprofit landscape to achieve Independent Sector’s mission.
