Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) was unanimously chosen Friday by his fellow Democrats as ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee, after the current occupant of the position, Rep. Sandy Levin (D-MI), announced he would step down from his longtime role.
Neal ran unopposed for the position after fellow committee member Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA) withdrew his own candidacy upon being nominated to become attorney general of California.
A longtime member of the influential tax-writing committee, Neal has also served as the top Democrat on its tax policy subcommittee.
In his new role, Neal has pledged to continue his focus on establishing tax policies that help working families, securing Medicare and Social Security, and creating healthcare policies that help children and seniors. “Now more than ever these policies are in danger of being rolled back to devastating levels and need to be protected,” he said.
