The Strong Black Womxn and Superwomxn Schema narratives are frequently heard throughout the life of the Black womxn, suggesting they feel both an obligation to help others, presenting an image of strength, at the expense of suppressing their own emotions and health needs. This multi-generational narrative becomes ingrained in their subconscious minds, often making them feel “guilty” for engaging in self-restoration. #CapeBreak refrains from using the word “self-care” because the term has been misused, overused, abused, and often equated with things with a price tag – like massages, pedicures, lavish trips, or things that come in a bottle. During this session, you’ll learn personally tested and theoretically grounded methods of self-restoration, resilience, and joy to address the Black womxn’s health and happiness. After choosing an incense stick to burn to set mood and intentions, you’ll be invited to share a brief “joy story” about what is right in your life, rather than what is wrong. After viewing and sharing your thoughts about a #CapeBreak PSA (https://vimeo.com/381707862), you’ll learn breathwork techniques to help lower your heart rate while centering your mind. Participants will leave feeling lighter (from the weight of stress) and Lighter (in a more spiritual place connected to your Higher Self), along with a sense of permission to remove the metaphorical cape associated with being the Strong Black Womxn!
