Independent Sector Announces Public Policy Fellows Council

The Council will bring expertise and experience to advance Independent Sector’s public policy agenda

(WASHINGTON, May 30, 2018) – Today, Independent Sector (IS) announces the Public Policy Fellows Council, which includes three distinguished professionals who will share their expertise and experience to help shape and advance the organization’s public policy agenda.

The three members of the Council are:

  • Jeremie Greer, Vice President of Policy and Research, Prosperity Now
  • Harold Hancock, Partner, McGuireWoods
  • Cindy M. Lott, Senior Lecturer and Academic Program Director for Nonprofit Management Programs at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies

These Policy Fellows will use IS’ platform to conduct research, engage other leaders and practitioners, and disseminate original work to the charitable sector.

“We are thrilled to welcome such an impressive group of Policy Fellows to the organization,” said Daniel J. Cardinali, president and CEO of Independent Sector. “This is all about bringing thought leadership from the outside in – and using that expertise to inform our policy agenda and extend its reach. That helps us to more effectively serve all charitable organizations that are working toward advancing the common good.”

Jeremie Greer brings with him extensive expertise in public policies that affect the prosperity of individuals and communities in the United States. As the vice president of policy and research at Prosperity Now, Greer oversees federal policy, state and local policy, applied research, and racial wealth divide teams, which are responsible for developing and executing the organization’s policy and research agendas and advocacy strategies. He began his career at the community level, working in the Columbia Heights and Shaw neighborhoods in the District of Columbia where he provided capacity building and technical support to small community-based organizations to help enhance their ability to serve low- and moderate-income DC residents. Greer also served in the 2017 cohort of the American Express NGen Fellows, a program of Independent Sector.

Harold Hancock is a tax expert with years of experience working on the House of Representative’s Committee on Ways and Means. In his current job as a partner at McGuireWoods, he brings a unique perspective bipartisan perspective to several areas of tax law, including business deductions and credits, tax accounting, tax-exempt organizations, and estate and gift taxes. Hancock was responsible for developing key provisions in major legislation, such as the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 and the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015.

Cindy M. Lott is one of the nation’s leading experts regarding regulatory and enforcement issues in the nonprofit sector. As senior lecturer as well as the academic program director for nonprofit management programs at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies, Lott teaches in the areas of governance, ethics and the relationship between nonprofits and government. Prior to her current academic role, for over a decade Lott developed and directed the National State Attorneys General Program at Columbia Law School, where she convened regulators, policymakers, academics and practitioners around emerging issues impacting the regulatory framework for the charitable sector. Lott also serves as senior fellow at the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute, where she develops and moderates a series of national convenings on state and federal regulation of the charitable sector and is engaged in research regarding regulatory capacity and enforcement at the state level.

The Policy Fellows’ term on the Council will run through May 2020. Additional Fellows will be added at a later date. The Policy Fellows will meet quarterly and are expected attend Independent Sector’s annual gathering, Upswell, on November 14-16 in Los Angeles.
