April 2005 Senate Finance Committee Hearing
The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on “Charities and Charitable Giving: Proposals for Reform,” on April 5, 2005.
This hearing continued the Committee's examination of the operations of the nonprofit sector. Its earlier steps included hearings during the summer of 2004 and its leaders' encouragement of Independent Sector to convene the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector.
Among those testifying were:
- Diana Aviv, IS president and CEO and executive director of the Panel;
- Leon Panetta, director of Panetta Institute for Public Policy and a member of the Panel's Citizens Advisory Group; and
- Brian Gallagher, Panel member and president of the United Way of America.
The Finance Committee also heard from: Mark Everson, commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service; Dr. Jane Gravelle, senior specialist in economic policy, Congressional Research Service; Mike Hatch, Attorney General of Minnesota; Richard Johnson, member of the Nashville law firm of Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis, PLLC; David Kuo, former special assistant to the President and deputy director of the White House Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives; and George K. Yin, chief of staff of the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation.
