Independent Sector is joining nonprofits all over the country today in encouraging everyone who is eligible to register to vote.
This morning, we set up a command center in our conference room to encourage anyone in our office building to register, ensure registration information is up-to-date, and verify polling locations. We are participating in this effort through our partnership with Nonprofit VOTE’s National Voter Registration Day.
Voter engagement is a critical part of nonprofit work because it empowers the people and communities we serve and helps further our missions. According to Nonprofit VOTE, people who vote are more likely to volunteer, contact their elected officials, and stay informed about local affairs. Nonprofit voters turned out in record numbers in 2012. The young, low-income, and diverse populations frequently served by nonprofits formed a larger share of the electorate than ever before.
